Trehalose is a disaccharide composed of two glucose molecules linked together.
It is a natural sweetener and a commonly used ingredient in the food industry due to its stabilising and moisturising properties.
It is also used in skin care products and medicines to maintain the stability of the active ingredients.
Trehalose is considered a low glycaemic index sweetener, which makes it suitable for people with diabetes or on low-carbohydrate diets.
In addition to its properties in the food industry, trehalose has also been investigated for its biological properties.
It has been found to have a protective effect on cells against cellular stress, which could be useful in treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.
It has also been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and it has been suggested that it may play a role in the prevention of chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes.
